studio one, like most digital audio workstations, now come with built-in tools to help you compose music in key and in scale. “snap to key” or “scale quantize” functions are provided in a piano roll. for studio one, these kinds of tricks are presented in a “musicalscale” file.

You can find these files as follows:

on windows by searching for “*.musicalscale” in either your documents or appropriate program files folder.

on macos by opening finder and searching for “musicalscale” and select “studio one musical scale” which should be the third option that pops up.

once you identify the location of the musicalscale files that are “factory” make sure you create backup copies.

replace the pre-installed with the files provided. then, in studio one, click the home button in your side browser, and click the button to refresh presets. you officially have all sorts of options to pick from!

Please note, every time you update your Studio One version, you may have to repeat this. It seems every time I have updated, I have had to replace the factory files with the ones I’ve provided. This however is on macOS, so I can’t speak for Windows on this.

Provided in numerical order, you get the Major and minor scales, including Harmonic and Melodic, as well as Hungarian minor, Neapolitan Major and minor, and more. Per scale provided are also degrees of those scales. The first degree is more or less always the “home” scale, except natural minor which will be the 6th degree of Major.
